Distribution Before Content: Go Where Attention Already Is

Content without distribution is a diary. Small accounts grow faster by inserting a useful voice where attention already gathers than by posting more into their own feed. One brand account went from 408 X impressions in February 2023 to 281,500 in May, about 27× more reach quarter on quarter, by replying to large accounts with substance. In B2B, the equivalent is founder-led LinkedIn and industry moments.

Key Takeaways

  • Below roughly 10,000 followers, your own posts barely travel. Replies and conversations under bigger voices do.
  • Speed is a strategy. A moment is worth most in its first hours.
  • In B2B, founders and experts are the distribution channel. People follow people.
  • Report the drop as well as the peak.

Posting is not distribution

Most content plans start with what to write and treat distribution as pressing 'publish'. For a small account that means talking to almost no one.

In case study 12, a consumer app's X account earned 408 impressions in February 2023. The strategy switched from posting to replying under large, relevant accounts, with context, data and questions rather than pitches. Impressions reached 114.9K in April and 281.5K in May: about 27× more reach in Q2 than in Q1.

Moments are distribution too

Attention also gathers around events. During a major cricket tournament, the same brand turned live match moments into short videos within hours (case study 13): 3.5M+ impressions and 1,200 new followers in five days.

B2B has its own moments: a new regulation, an industry incident, a major report, a conference. The team that explains it clearly first earns the attention.

The B2B version: people, not logos

In expert markets, buyers follow practitioners they trust. In case study 10, two founders' LinkedIn profiles of about 13,000 and 5,000+ followers and a LinkedIn newsletter of 3,400+ subscribers did the distribution that a company page could not.

The principle is the same as the reply strategy: put a credible voice where the audience already is.

Be honest about timing

The X growth peaked during the cricket season and fell back to 63.2K impressions in June as it ended. Timing raised the ceiling; the reply system is what let a small account reach it.

Reporting the drop tells you what has to be sustained, and makes the peak believable.

Design distribution first

Before planning content, list where your buyers already spend attention: which people, publications, communities and events. Then decide how your voice gets there. The LinkedIn Content Research Workflow and LinkedIn Content start from that map, not from a content calendar.
