Case Study 03 / LinkedIn Content

Building an owned audience that opens 42% of what it receives

A newsletter system that pairs AI research and drafting with a human editor and founder voice built an owned audience of 345 maritime professionals averaging a 42.2% open rate and a 10.5% click rate across 117 sends, with 4 unsubscribes since the list started in December 2025. The August 2026 issue reached 370 people and opened at 44.8%, with a 13.9% click rate.

01 · Client

Maritime compliance software company

Maritime compliance software and services company publishing a monthly newsletter for fleet operators. Name withheld until the client approves publication.

The challenge

The company's credibility sat with its founders, both former senior seafarers, but that credibility was invisible outside their personal networks. There was no regular publication, no owned audience, and no way to stay in front of operators between buying cycles that can run for years.

02 · System

What existed before.

  • Occasional one-off emails with no editorial rhythm
  • Founder expertise expressed in conversations, not in anything publishable
  • No feedback loop: nobody knew which topics the audience actually valued

03 · Intervention

What was built and run.

01

Defined a publication, not a promotion

A monthly fleet briefing: regulatory updates, risk insights, compliance tips and technology notes for people who run fleets. Product mentions earned their place inside useful content rather than replacing it.

02

Built a research-to-draft pipeline

A workflow that gathers maritime news and regulatory changes, ranks topics by relevance to the audience, and produces a first draft. A human editor rewrites, checks every claim and adds the founders' perspective.

03

Closed the loop with performance data

72 hours after each send, campaign results are recorded against the topics covered, and topic weights are updated so the next issue's selection improves automatically.

04

Connected it to the founders' LinkedIn

The same thinking ran as founder-led LinkedIn content (strategy, writing and editing all done in-house; see case study 10), with engaged LinkedIn followers invited onto the list through a tagged welcome email.

04 · Outcome

What changed.

345 subscribed maritime professionals, a list that opens at 42.2% on average with a 10.5% click rate across 117 sends, and only 4 unsubscribes since December 2025.

Standout sends: the August 2026 issue (370 recipients, 44.8% open, 13.9% click), a product launch email (169 recipients, 49.1% open, 14.7% click) and a year-end founders' note (182 recipients, 48.5% open, 18.6% click).

The newsletter became the main distribution channel for the lead magnets that followed, starting with the checklist in case study 01.

05 · Lessons

What we would tell you.

  • Engagement drifts, so measure it. Open rates on the September 2026 sends (35.4% and 27.7%) were lower than August's. Without the feedback loop, that drift would have been invisible until it became a problem.
  • AI drafts, people decide. The pipeline compresses research and first drafts, but the editor and the founders' voice are why people open it.
  • Your own list is the asset that compounds. Every later campaign started from this audience instead of from zero.
